What to see and do in San Francisco? Pier 39, Alcatraz Island, Chinatown, Yerba Buena, the Golden Gate Bridge, Lombardo Street, the Wax Museum, nightclubs, and winery and breweries just to name a few. Pier 39 is a great place to start your visit. Sea lions frolic on platforms right outside the stores. While they may stink a little, they are sure enjoyable to watch. Big burly animals fighting for the best place to lay their massive carcasses in the sun. They are like watching a group of little children, pushing and shoving and cavorting. There are 110 shops and restaurants, including an aquarium, carnival rides, street entertainers, live music, magicians, snack bars and sit down seafood restaurants, San Francisco style where mussels, clams, salmon, and lobster are always in season. Most attractions are within walking distance if you have comfortable shoes and all day to walk. Ghirardelli Square is a great place to carbo load with a delicious hot fudge sundae before heading off for Lombardi Street or for a cruise around the Golden Gate Bridge. For adventure seekers there is the boat ride out to Alcatraz Island, one of the countries most notorious prisons and housing at times the countries most notorious prisoners. Alcatraz Island is located 1.5 miles offshore and is referred to as The Rock. Alcatraz was a military prison and a Federal Bureau of Prison federal prison until 1963. Some of its most notable inmates were Robert Stroud, better known as the "Birdman of Alcatraz" he spent seventeen years in the prison, six years in segregation. Al Capone arrived at the prison in 1934. He continued running his rackets from behind bars by buying off prison guards. Machine Gun Kelley, Creepy Karpis are among other famous inmates. San Francisco is home to sea lions, delicious seafood restaurants, entertainment, shopping, wax museums, and endless places of interest.
